Best Professional Interview Look
Before I hung my own shingle, I was an expert at interviews. I had folders prepared with beautiful cream colored paper and a copy of my cover letter, resume, and writing sample pre-prepped. I went over what my answers to the typical interview questions would be so I could make sure I wasn’t stumped. But most importantly, I laid out my clothes the night before to make sure I made just the right impression. Now, I am the interviewer and I’ve been on both sides of the table. When approaching a professional interview, here are some tips to put your best foot forward.
Have a navy blue or charcoal colored suit that fits you well. A tailored suit will always give you a smart first impression. Look through Shop my Instagram for suiting ideas or explore the Courtroom professional link.
Wear a plain cream or white colored blouse or shell underneath your jacket. Avoid trendy or wild patterns. Go for a look that is clean, polished, and classy.
Jewelry: Pearls are your best bet for a classic, conservative look. Invest in a string of pearls and pearl studs, or sport a delicate necklace.
Heels: My choice is always to wear heels, but make sure they are not platform heels or too loud. If you do not regularly wear heels, wear a flat that is comfortable for you. I have interviewed people that do not know how to walk in heels and it can be awkward and in some cases dangerous. This is a time you want to take the safe bet so that you feel comfortable and confident. There are plenty of flats or wedged shoes that are stylish and professional. I have a list of favorite flats I recommend in an upcoming post.
Should you wear hose? When I first started practicing law, this was debatable. Now the standard particularly in Oklahoma is that no one wears hose. That said, it is concealer for your legs. If you have a day where you can’t shave or it’s cold and have a skirt suit, it can be great to have a pair of panty hose or tights to warm you up in the winter months.
Smile and relax. Part of your appearance in an interview is your friendly demeanor, how comfortable you are with yourself, and how you put your interviewer at ease. Don’t forget that part of the interview is not just your credentials, but how likeable you are to the interviewer.
