Tuesday Takeover: Nikki Jones Edwards
For our first Tuesday Takeover, let me introduce Nikki Jones Edwards, a premier litigator with an active family law practice in Oklahoma City. Nikki vibes on the same energy level that I have, which is a rare find. She’s direct and intense but with a heart of gold. In true modern woman fashion, she balances her professional life, leadership, and philanthropy with being a Mother. After all that, she still manages to find time for meditation, bonding with family and friends, and mentoring young lawyers. She is a true boss, and I’m happy to pass the keyboard to feature her style.
xo, Katherine
Hello Fashionistas: When Katherine asked me to be the first guest contributor here on Maz Modern, I said, "Who, me?" I think my fashion sense is less convincing than my legal acumen, but I always welcome the opportunity to connect with other women.
While I love fashion and want to look my best, I have a motto that I use frequently, "I hate to shop but love to buy." As a busy working mom/litigation director at Phillips Murrah, I have less time to shop than ever; hence my wardrobe reflects a cacophony of items, which create my style. Mine is a mishmash of pieces one might describe as timeless, classic, trendy, and comfortable. So, where and how does one shop when you hate to shop? Go local. Support women. Buy pieces that compliment what you already own, continuing to incorporate the old to create a new look. To buy local and support the female fashion entrepreneurs, I often shop with Oklahoma City locals, Christi McConnell (Cabi stylist), Cyndi Shelby (Lela Pearl clothier), and Betsy King Shoes (shoe boutique in the Paseo District).
The Pearl by Lela Rose overcoat embodies the look of fashion icons, Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn. I recently received a compliment on the coat from a younger coworker and described it using the Audrey Hepburn reference and she said “who is that?” So, I am sorry to younger readers who may not recognize those names, but do some google research. I have to admit the coat was an indulgence purchase, but when I saw it, I HAD TO HAVE IT. The look and style are timeless, yet fun. I love the black and white geometric fabric, with the faux black fur on the sleeves' cuff. The coat swings as I walk and doesn't bind anywhere, the bonus of comfort is always appreciated.
Power and Luck Come in Red
Speaking of red, I ALWAYS add a splash of red if I am headed to court which makes me feel powerful or lucky. Call it superstition or an old habit, but a client once told me, "You have to wear some red because it is so lucky." Since then, you will often find me with a red bracelet (Hermes bangle bracelet shown here) or red reading glasses on days I am in court. Eye Bobs, is my favorite brand.
