Tuesday Takeover: Elizabeth Isaac

On this Tuesday, Elizabeth Isaac takes over the Maz Modern blog to showcase her quirky, eclectic, and practical attorney style. With a knack for guiding creative professionals through their legal hurdles, she surely is one to watch for style and poise. Finding her own unique blend of comfort and style, Liz has solidly found her own fashion voice and we are excited to have her style speak volumes today.

xoxo, Katherine

I help businesses, innovators, and artists assess and protect their inventions, brands, designs, and creative works to leverage and enforce their intellectual property portfolios and enhance their business options. In other words, I am a patent, trademark, and copyright attorney—with a splash of litigation on the side. Dunlap Codding has been my second home for almost 9 years. This forward-thinking legal office is the perfect fit for my eclectic and sometimes quirky style grounded in some core values and traditions.

Business As Usual

Our office dressed casually compared to most law firms pre-pandemic, and the post-2020 world has only fostered our comfortable “dress code.” But comfort does not necessitate a lack of cuteness or class. For a Zoom call (or the rare in-person) meeting, a black jacket on my coat hanger is clutch for quickly cleaning up my appearance. This jacket, by Eileen Fisher, elegantly drops past my knees for a sleek and slimming look. The stretch material offers a lightweight feel while maintaining structure and tidiness.

Oh, and of course this jacket has pockets. Although an entire wardrobe of Eileen Fisher would break the budgeta couple of timeless pieces will serve your closet well for the long haul. My colorful blouse, part of Anthro’s Mauve line, brightens up my otherwise all-black and borderline militant attire. I love V-neck designs and encourage all women to find a neckline that works for them and repeat it. The puffy peasant sleeves add some trend and jazz and can easily be reigned in by Ms. Fisher if needed. Mauve has furnished my closet with a steady supply of work-to-weekend blouses over several years.

My heels are dressy enough for a courtroom yet chunky enough to save my ankles. The suede material adds a wintery and subdued texture. This particular pair is by Stuart Weitzman and was a killer find (thank you, Gigi) at the San Marcos, Texas outlet mall.

Get Comfy, Get Active, Get Focused

I wear these Madewell black, 10” high-rise jeans often. They work with heels, flats, and tennies. I love Madewell because they provide support in the right places. And the black is black enough to give the appearance of a pant elevated from a lounge-looking pair of jeans. With back and front pockets, these black pants provide utility from working in the office to gathering my toddler from daycare.

During a lunch break, I walk almost daily around Myriad gardens downtown OKC or on my co-worker’s office treadmill outfitted with lap top platform. That is where my Sofft slip-ons come in handy in combination with Madewell jeans. No need for a complete wardrobe change. Most flats are not my friend and leave me with heel blisters, so I love that these babies are backless. Plus, I can confidently wear them in and out of meetings and on the street.

I love to layer and stay cozy at my desk, so I keep a wrap on my desk chair—like the black, cable sweater wrap I’m wearing in the office couch pic. This Akemi + Kin wrap is extremely versatile and pairs with almost anything.

Pro tip: I shop final sales online at Anthropologie for wraps and kimonos and other one-size-fits-all items.

Seeing Clearly, Thinking Clearly

A decade ago, doctors advised me to wear glasses full-time and now, they have become part of my identity to my colleagues and friends. This moderate cat-eye pair sits nicely on my face and is a solid investment. While I used to choose black frames, I now opt for a softer, less harsh color combination that blends with my face and hair while still popping with style.

The Bose headphones shown in Silky white and Sandstone are a must at work for helping to cancel noise and keeping focused on analyzing complex matters and technology that require my undivided attention.

Tradition

I wear the same jewelry every day because it lets me bring along to work things I love and are unique to me: pearl studs; a gold owl medallion gifted by my mother; a gold “crown” adorned with a minnu and an ornate cross gifted by the Indian orthodox church; a set of gold bangles gifted by my mother-in-law; and a delicate gold, bolo bracelet with matching gold ring—both featuring my son’s December birthstone and gifted by my husband.

My long necklaces may not have been the ideal fashion choice with my scooping V-neck blouse, but the daily ritual of wearing these pieces trumps the need to stay on trend. While I cannot supply a website link for most of my jewelry, I do advocate discovering a unique nugget to place around your neck or your hands that embodies a special person or memory as part of your personal style.
